Born in Tainan, Taiwan, in 1971, Chen Meng-Tze graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, College of Arts, National Taiwan Normal University, in 1993. He received his Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Art and Design at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, in 2006, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Fine Arts, College of Arts, National Taiwan Normal University, in 2017.

Working primarily with a combined technique of egg tempera and oil paint, Chen explores the contrasting qualities of transparency, texture, and layering inherent in the two media, creating delicate and richly textured pictorial surfaces. His works are characterized by subdued colours and subtle treatments of light and shadow. Through nuanced tonal gradations and delicate renderings of light, he invites viewers to slow their gaze and contemplate the spaces, landscapes, and emotions within his paintings.

Selected solo exhibitions include Looking Through – Chen Meng-Tze Solo Exhibition at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2007); Rebirth of Landscape at Ming Shan Art, Hsinchu (2017); Hiding Light at Ming Shan Art (2019); and Thusness at One Art Space, Taipei (2021). Selected group exhibitions include the 10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Liao Chi-Chun Oil Painting Award at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2011); “Dissatisfaction”: Exploring the Best State of Completion in Painting at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (2015); Landscape Translation at Pingtung Art Museum (2016); and Dwelling: On the Landscapes by the Roadside and Us at Hsinchu City Museum of Art (2023).

Chen has received the Chi Mei Art Talent Training Award, the Po-Chuan Award of the Taiwan Nan-Mei Fine Arts Association, the 2nd Union Impression Grand Prize, the Creation Award of the Taiwan Nan-Mei Fine Arts Association, the 6th Liao Chi-Chun Oil Painting Award in 2006, and the Paris Grand Prize of the Paris Cultural and Educational Foundation. He was an artist-in-residence at the 435 International Artist Village from 2008 to 2009. His works are held in the collections of National Taiwan Normal University, the University of Tsukuba, Tainan Art Museum, the Chi Mei Art Foundation, the Union Cultural Foundation, Chang Liu Art Museum, and the Hsinchu City Cultural Affairs Bureau (Hsinchu City Museum of Art), among other institutions.
