+ OVERVIEW
This painting, Old Pine and Bridge, pictures a humid environment. Blank spaces and thick ink were used to enhance the elusiveness of the landscape. Thick dark ink was applied with wet brush in swift strokes, followed by dried brush on wet paper. Slanted strokes were used with movement of the wrist, depicting its curvaceous trunk of the old pine, its leaves, the bridge and distant mountains. The aesthetic quality of ink was enhanced by its flow and movement.
Wang Pan-Youn's rich emotion was expressed by the symbolic subject of oil paintings and the expressions of ink paintings, which relate to his tough life and rich experience. Through his works, the audience can experience his refined yet rich emotions and his scholarly humble character, suggested by the subject of pine. Wang believed that "a piece of artwork is a reflection of the psychological mind." His emotion echoes with the running stream, the mountain and the bridge in a lyrical statement. Art critic Hsieh Li-Fa once compared Wang's paintings with a poem, as if his works are narrating with a familiar mother-tongue language, reflecting Wang's bittersweet life.
