+ OVERVIEW
This belt hook is carefully carved on a hetian white jade, whose lustrous and translucent characteristics gleams softly under the light. Its surface is reticulated and decorated in high relief carving, of two chi dragons, a grown-up teaching a child, which is lying on the belly of the adult. The dragon has thick brows and beady eyes, wide nose, rectangular mouth and triangular ears. Hair is thick behind its neck. A young dragon stands on the adult with its four paws facing downward, as if gliding through the clouds. The composition of the dragons on a belt hook is an ingenious idea with well-planned proportion. Russet inclusions of the white jade draw attention to the head and body of the young dragon. ‘Teaching a young dragon' has been a classic theme of jade carvings in the Qing Dynasty. It was believed that the adult chi dragon was teaching the young one about manipulating the wind and the rain, getting ready to pass on the responsibility and tradition to the younger generation. Made with an exceptional jade material and excellent craftsmanship, this jade piece is a masterpiece of the kind.
