+ OVERVIEW
After relocating to Xizhi in 1980, Chiang Chao-shen embodied various styles into his paintings. This masterpiece was completed in 1986 with hints of realistic drawings and the skills of the Song School on the mountains. Space was structured at the center to enhance the elusiveness and depth in the painting. Outlines on the mountains were made, and the hills were coloured using a broad brush. Cun and dry ink enhance the ruggedness of rocks. Light and shadow of the hills were depicted through colours. Such a combination of techniques shows the typical scholastic taste. Hikers were depicted in the forest which was painted with dots of turquoise. The elusiveness of the mists were created, contrasting with the solid fine outlines of the kiosk, while echoing with the red coloured leaves. The tranquil scene was accentuated by depiction of rocky shores, bridges and a boat. A poem from the Song scholar Lin He-jing highlighted Chiang’s theme and his hermit personality.
