+ OVERVIEW
Zitan was imported to China in the Qing Dynasty and soon it took over Huanghuali as the high-quality wood which was used in luxury furniture since the Ming Dynasty. This was due to the over-exhaustion of Huanghuali and the heaviness of zitan which raised its value. Since the Qing Dynasty, zitan has been used in royal furniture. This zitan brushpot has a wide opening sculpted with a robust look. Its smooth surface shines with satin polish. It is always believed that the less ornaments it has, the finer the material. Zitan, being precious in its own nature, would normally be used in its natural form. This robust brushpot alone would stand out on a study desk. The wood is dark with dense grain, polished with satin like texture. These grains shine through its dense structure, suggesting its superb quality. Sculpted with straight sides and a widened base, this brushpot would enhance the scholarly atmosphere of a study room, making this an exquisite piece of scholar object.
