Yin Qi is a contemporary Chinese artist born in Beijing in 1962. He currently lives and works between Beijing and Paris, leading a nomadic artistic life.
Yin Qi holds a strong academic background in fine arts. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1987 and taught there until 1989. He then traveled to France, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts Paris from 1989 to 1991, and graduating from the Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques (IHEAP Paris) in 1996.
Yin Qi's art explores the relationship between space, materiality, and the inner self, moving away from narrative to capture the act of "seeing" and generating concepts through sensory perception of objects, nature, and people. His paintings, featuring elements like waves, mountains, cityscapes, or everyday objects, evoke a nostalgic dialogue with the world. He delves into perception and consciousness, a shift from the spatial focus of modernist painting.
He has exhibited extensively worldwide, with works in numerous collections. Notable solo shows include "Sleeping Lake" (2018), "Placement" (2015), "Life Is Elsewhere" (2007), and an exhibition at CAIS Gallery (2005). Yin Qi has also co-authored several travel books with his partner.
