WANG Chen, courtesy name Zining and pseudonym Pengxin, was a prominent painter from Taicang, Jiangsu. A fifth-generation descendant of the legendary Wang Shimin and great-grandson of Wang Yuanqi, he is esteemed as one of the "Lesser Four Wangs." After earning his Jinshi degree in 1760, he served as the Prefect of Yongzhou. Inheriting the Loudong School tradition, his early works were meticulous, while his later style evolved toward a sparse, desolate aesthetic. Characterized by forceful dry-brush techniques and profound textures, his landscapes epitomize the scholarly pursuit of transcendental isolation, marking him as a pivotal figure in mid-Qing orthodox painting.
