Born in Shanghai in 1942, Tong is a female calligrapher from Taiwan. She received her BFA from National Taiwan Normal University and later studied oil painting at the University of Massachusetts, where she received an MFA degree in 1970. Starting from studying ancient scripts, Tong developed a style from the kaishu of Yan Zhenqin and tablet scripts of the Wei Period in the early stage, and in the recent years, her style has shifted towards Wang Xizhi and Huai Su. Her works are characterized by the integration of classical Chinese and western composition theories, presenting fusion aesthetics of contemporary graphic design and traditional Chinese calligraphy. In 1995, she won the grand prize at the Fourth Lion Creative Art Award.
