Chen Yingjie (also known as HuaTunan) was born in Foshan, Guangdong, China, in 1991, and currently lives and works in Shunde, Foshan. In 2010, he studied at Raffles Design Institute Singapore. His multifaceted practice encompasses easel painting, large-scale murals, live performance, and spatial installation. Through various media, Chen explores the synthesis of traditional Chinese ink painting and Western street graffiti. By navigating and balancing these seemingly contradictory cultural forms, he has forged a distinctive artistic language, employing techniques such as splashing, spraying, and breaking ink to reinterpret traditional Chinese landscapes and natural imagery in a contemporary context.

Chen has exhibited internationally in cities including Paris, London, Brussels, Chicago, Hong Kong, Taipei, Shanghai, Beijing, and Singapore. Selected solo exhibitions include Shaping the Essence (Danysz Gallery, Shanghai, 2018); The Balance of Nature (Mazel Galerie, Brussels, 2020); Critical Point (Whitestone Gallery, Taipei, 2020); Inevitability (Whitestone Gallery, Taipei, 2021); and The Dust of a Long Journey (Whitestone Gallery, Hong Kong, 2022).

Selected group exhibitions include World Street Art Exhibition (CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, 2016); Art from the Streets (ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, 2018); Boundless Space (Power Station of Art, Shanghai, 2020); and Not Enough Distance: Cross-Border Trend Art Exhibition (Pearl Art Museum, Shanghai, 2021).

His works are held in institutional collections including the Honolulu Museum of Art, WWF Hong Kong, and CapitaLand Group Singapore. He has also collaborated with international brands including Cartier, BMW, and Louis Vuitton. In 2013, Chen was named one of the “25 Contemporary Chinese Artists You Need to Know” by Complex magazine and was selected for Forbes China’s “30 Under 30” list in 2020. In 2016, he participated in an international artist residency at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
