Lawrence Torto was born in Accra, Ghana, in 1993, where he continues to live and work. Growing up in the studio of his father, Ghanaian artist Williams Sodja Torto (Carlos), he was exposed to art from an early age and began painting at the age of five. In 2011, he graduated from Vision Art College in Accra with a Diploma in Visual Art.

Torto works across abstraction, figuration, and mixed media, with his mixed-media practice deeply inspired by African culture and traditions. Incorporating culturally significant Ghanaian textiles, including Kente and wax-print fabrics, with acrylic and recycled materials, he deconstructs, layers, collages, and reassembles these elements to create portraits and figurative compositions. Drawing on personal experience, Black culture, nature, and his surroundings, his work engages with history, politics, and social expression, using culturally resonant textiles and everyday materials to articulate contemporary African identity and cultural experience.

Torto has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including The Boundary Beyond Figures, jointly presented by Arushi Gallery and Berj Art Gallery, Los Angeles, and Amplify at Thinkspace Projects, Los Angeles (2022). In the same year, he presented the solo exhibition Aesthetic Moments in Shangri-La at Galerie OVO, Taipei. He participated in BECAUSE / Perché Sì at Dorothy Circus Gallery, Rome (2023), and Textile Alchemy: Exploring Fiber, Form, and Transformation at Spiralis Gallery in the United States (2025). His works have also been presented through international art platforms and galleries across Europe, the United States, and Asia.
